de-californicating - 1 more question
Posted: Wed Sep 27, 2000 4:35 pm

Hello:
I'd like to thank the 10 or so folks who emailed me yesterday with
an answer to my question about the t-fitting in the vacuum line. I
was even more amazed that all 10 answers were the same!
Next question: I got the feeling from several of you that on non-CA
spec KLR's, there is only a single [1] vent line that exits from
the rear of the tank? True? And if true, then I imagine that on a
CA-spec bike we could simply vent a single line and plug the other?
As it is right now my de-Californized bike has 2 vent lines coming out
the back and dropping down into the frame area to vent if needed. I'd
rather just plug one at the tank and let the other vent down via a
hose.
Also, I have completed my intitial draft of my "How To De-California
Your CA-Spec Bike" article. It's in MS Word format and I'd be glad to
send it out to anyone who emails me in order to have you proof read
this or give it a try. Again, if you live in CA do NOT do this. You
are required by law to have this equipment.
Thanks,
Tom Vervaeke

de-californicating - 1 more question

by Weaver, Mark
i thought about plugging mine. if i didn't live in california, i would have
i tied off the hose that came out of there, but it might have still seemed
to fill up with gas if i overfilled (or tipped over, but i never do that). i
finally would have ended up taking my no-longer-used t-valve, and tying both
tank vents into a single tube that goes down under the shock with the other
vent tubes.
the way i would have done my bike would have been to follow kurt's
instructions and simply disconnect everything, and then only connect up the
stuff i needed (and plug the hole between airfilter and carb).

I don't remember the colors and it's dark outside so I can't check but you cap off the right vent tube and leave a hose on the left....

new '01 (boots)

I wear hiking boots or the all leather combat boots. I don't think the
junkle style combat boots offer much side protection in a fall. If you are
going to do alot of off road riding I suggest you get motocross boots. They
have more ankle support then combat boots. You don't want to break your
ankle out in the middle of nowhere. If you use boots with shoe laces you
should either tuck them inside the boot or duct tape the laces to the boot.
It's looks funny when you stop and try to put your foot down but can't
because your shoe laces are caught on part of the bike.

Purchased a new '01 klr650 yesterday, great looking bike. It will be
my first motorcycle. I am 6'6" 240lbs and it fits me perferctly. But
you guys were right about that front brake. It feels really weak andnose
dives.
My question is do I really need to buy a pair of riding boots? I was
going to wear my cowboy boots or combat boots when riding. I don't
want to buy special pair of boots, it would be kinda like women who
have 10 pairs of black dress shoes that all look alike.Craig
