This is from the San Francisco Chronicle 9-21-2000.
Son of Firestone
Those lovely BMW motorcycles (some of the new ones, anyway) have a
problem: Soft rims,a potential for disaster.
The CHP bought 650 of the bikes and BMW is replacing the rims for free.
You civilian owners, it will cost you $820.11 for the same fix. Or: An
arm and a leg.
That's the word from my motorized-bicycle expert, John Joss.
The moral: If you want your Beemer bike fixed, Join the CHP.
Story by Scott Ostler.

Didn't the mags on monoshock R's or early K's get a reputation for
breaking, way back in the eighties?
I'm getting some deja-poo here (I think I've seen this shite somewhere
before).

Hi Luke,
Yes, I do, on the side panels. I believe they are caused by local stress near
a fastner, possibly stretching out the pigment in the plastic. Had some real
big ones after knocking aa shroud against a tree! Probably no cure except
paint.
Regards,
Brian
