xr650l vs klr 650

Hi I am looking at buying a large dual-purpose bike, and have narrowed down the list to the XR650L or the KLR 650. Both bikes seem to have their strong points...the Honda appears to have better suspension and especially better brakes. An edge in the off-road riding... The KLR has the edge in fuel capacity, and leans a bit more to the kind of riding I would do - extended rides, mixture of pavement and gravel country roads, with some off-roading as well. The bit of wind protection and stability that comes with the KLR on the highway is a definate plus. The brake issue is one that concerns me, as it is mentioned quite often by in lists like this. Any help with this?

The brakes are fine with me. I upgraded to a braided line on the front because I was bored. It is definitely nicer but not necessary (IMO). Two different bikes you are comparing. I am glad I didn't have to make a choice like that because no matter what you do some day you will second guess. The KLR is a great bike for what you described below. Good luck. Any help with this? ______________ Yes, look at the DR650...add an IMS tank for KLR range of 250 miles...enjoy improved off-road performance and only a slight decrease in road comfort do to the lighter weight and lack of fairing....it has a superb front floating disc... I looked at most of the other bikes out there before I picked the KLR. The Honda 650L is air cooled and the KLR is watercooled. If you do alot of stop and go driving or are in a really hot area get a watercooled engine. The KLR isn't for motocrossing. It likes the street and simple roads. If you can drive a regular car (as slow as it will go) on the dirt road it's perfect for the KLR. It's also top heavy with that 6 gal tank. The KLR doesn't like steep loose gravel roads with hidden ruts. steep smooth hard pack is OK. I have not noticed a problem with the stock breakes but my bike isn't loaded down with gear. You may also want to look at the Suzuki DR400zs if you don't mind filling up every 100 miles. The dr400z is better in the rough stuff then the KLR and it's water cooled, but costs more then a KLR. Sure is does "best" where a car goes super slow (car = super slow, KLR = 30mph+), but it also does just fine where a car could only travel going "end over end". This is my opinion and I'm stickin' to it! where can i get a magnetic oil plug?
