For the last two oil changes I've used Castrol GTX SAE20W-50 per the advice of the mechanic at the dealer where I bought the bike. Do you guys who change your oil every 800-1000 miles also change the filter that often, or do you alternate every other oil change? The manual calls out changing the oil and filter every 6000 miles. I know that the oil and filter are not all that expensive, but is it really necessary to change oil every 800-1000 miles? Under what conditions would this be necessary? I figure if I change them twice as often as the manual recommends, I'm on the safe side.
Another unrelated question. A while back someone mentioned using some kind of a solution available at an aquarium store to remove scratches from a plastic face shield. Does it really work, and where again is it available? At about $12 a pop, I've got a collection of three or four full-face shields that I'd like to salvage. Thanks for any advice.

Bruce,
I change mine that often partly because I see how quickly the oil turns black through the oil level window after I change the oil. I am just being overly cautios by changing so often because, IMO this large single cylinder is pumping pretty fast when I am zipping down the tollway at 70 & 80 mph for at least 30 minutes, plus when riding off road, the engine heats up quite a bit because of slower speeds and higher revs. To me it makes sense, to others, who knows...

>Wayne, I have 2 klr's a 92 and a 95. I order a dozen filters at a time and change my oil every 3000 clicks. Never had a problem. If you think about how a filter works as it collects particles the better it should filter. I don't think changing it after only 1500 miles would be a benefit. Even if the filter would completely clog there is a bypass. I also use magnetic drain plugs ,an old trick from when I use to race Huskys cross country. I also believe that any good grade modern multi-viscosity oil will do the trick. Remember that the KLR is water cooled and runs at a much cooler temp than the old air cooled motors. I think that one of the main problems with the oil is that on short trips the motor doesn't get hot enough to elimanate the condensation that forms inside which leads to contamanation. Hope this helps. Later , MM

I've almost 3K miles on my 2001 and have changed the oil and filter 5 times.
When changing the filter and oil, I get everything ready ( tools, oil, rags
etc.) and then heat the motor, as soon as I shut the bike off the oil first
gets drained, then I pull the used filter out and lay it on a piece of black
cloth. After the change is done I always check out the black cloth where
the filter drained and what I see makes me want to change the oil again,
soon. To each his own. Later.

Sounds like a very loving relationship to me. You really should use a Pamper instead of a cloth, tho. james in s.c.
