new klr exhaust

Hey KORG!
Spoke to Steve Kesslinger at Quality Engine on Friday last week and was very
encouraged by what he had to say.
He started with my stock-engined A13 with K&N filter and SuperTrapp IDS with
6 discs. With a dynajet kit installed and his new type of exhaust he has
managed approximately a 2 hp increase across the rpm range from throttle
crack on up to 6K + (not sure how high he went yet). This is with a pipe
that is a bit smaller in diameter than the Trapp. He is working this week
with a larger pipe and expects a little better results. He has done some air
box work and his idea was to do it on the side cover rather than the rest of
the box to enable it to be returned to stock condition with a new cover
only. I thought that was a good idea. Anyone have any disagreements? How
about heated air coming in?
All this is with a pipe that is approximately 2 db louder than the
newly-packed Trapp. I'm personally impressed so far. The pipe is totally
mechanical and without packing. It will not have a USFS spark arrestor upon
release and Steve is not sure if he will be selling a SS or regular pipe
setup. The price is going to be around $300. Again personally, I think
that's pretty not bad considering the Big Gun is so lound and $200 more
expensive and gives the same power increase in a narrower power band. Steve
is trying very hard to get everything tuned just right while allowing
everything to be returned to almost stock with minimal expense and time.
I'm working on getting my personal web pages up so I can post pictures of my
bike in his shop being worked on. I'll also post the dyno print-outs and
some pictures of the pipe.
Release date for the pipe is supposed to be within the next 3 months.
Thanks,
Jim Jackson II

Hi Jim,
Your results sound like about what I got with similar mods to my A13. Did
you see my dyno run posts, etc?
I hope you enjoy your "new" bike as much as I enjoy mine. The overall
rideability is greatly improved from stock and there is a pretty good
percentage power gain in the lower rpm range.
Jim

time to change the oil
Posted: Wed Sep 20, 2000 8:34 am
by Brad Davis
I m glad we are talking about oil again. I can tell my
oil needs changing now at about 1000 miles. These are
the telltale signs for me:
1) Downshifting is more difficult. It clunks more
while downshifting. Upshifting is still smooth.
2) Lately it has sometimes been hard to find first
gear. It was a piece of cake with new oil.
3) Before I start the engine, I push the bike to break
the wet clutch to avoid the 1st gear clunk. With new
oil the break was easily done. Now the breaking point
is noticeably greater.
4) I haven t had appreciable oil consumption but it
looks pretty dark in the sight glass.
I ve read that MC applications are much more severe
than auto applications because the transmission and
wet clutch apply tremendous shearing stress to the
lubricant. Makes sense to me and I will continue to
change my oil at 1000 mile intervals or earlier if I
feel it is time.
My bike had Spectro previously and needed a change at
1000 miles. Now I am running Mobil 1 15-50 and it
needs a change at 1000 miles. Frankly, I don t think
it would be good to run the oil to 3000 miles like the
manual says (maybe if it was all highway you could I
haven t tried that yet). This time I might try Castrol
GTX.
As always, I am looking forward to the opinions of
those who know a hell of a lot more about this than I
do.
