alaska reservations

What's the list wisdom on making reservations at campgrounds and/or motels in Alaska? If plans go good, I want to be in Alaska around the 2nd week of July next year and plan to make the run up to Deadhorse. I've always heard that things get pretty well filled up during that time of year but I've also read trip reports that lead me to think that some riders have found accommodations as they went.
