copper canyon -> speaking spanish

Post by Tom Vervaeke » Thu Sep 07, 2000 11:44 am

Hello: I did say in a previous message that how comformtable one feels in Mexico is a personal thing. I spent 4 years in the Army during the ages of 19-23 and went all over the world. Compared to some other places I've been (Thailand, Turkey, Okinawa, etc..) I didn't feel uncomfortable at all in Mexico. But that was ME. My partner and I had the Spanish linguistic abilities of a 1 year old. I could count 1-10, the word for beer and gas. The rest we figured out as we went along by using our phrase book and dictionaries and trying our best to go native. We also encountered lots of Creel folks who spoke fine English and of course Creel is always full of Americans some of whom speak English and Spanish quite well and are willing to help. IMHO, if one is resourcesful, one will do quite fine. As for spare parts, first aid, etc.. that is a MUST for any adventure below the border. We were both riding the same kind of bikes so spares were easy. We also carried camping gear in case we could not get a motel, but this was never needed. I'd love to go back next spring, say mid-late March if anyone is interested. I'd take the KLR. tom ===== ========================================================= Tom Vervaeke, Colorado, USA |Email: tom_vervaeke@...
