engineering type question

Since mail is kinda slow today, thought I would throw this question out
to the collective, it has always wondered me.....guess it's time to find
out.
Why do all/most dirt/dp bikes have larger OD front wheels than the
rear. I know there has to be a good reason, but it escapes me.
