I can't decide which would be better: the private party bike or the dealer bike, both have possible poor histories. The dealer bike has been pushed too hard most likely, but comes with a dealer backing unless it is "AS IS". The Private party bike could be "not quick enough" (reasons for the mods) which means it too has been pushed. As far as the XR500/KLR650 goes, not a lot of comparison the XR500r was a fraction of the KLR weight with real off road suspension. I had a XR500r and it kicked butt, mine more than once :^). Hated starting it though. The KLR will out last the 500 in the range of 3 to 1 in my guess. The 500 was pretty close to "high strung" from my seat of the pants.
