Hey Russ-
If that's the Explorer you're talking about, I threaded my front straps
around the steering column. This works great for refueling: just quick
release the two front buckles and flip the bag backward. I threaded the rear
straps under the front of the seat where I can easily cross the two straps
and tuck under the front of the seat when not in use, virtually disappearing.
Another extra I did was to take sections of bicycle tire tubes and
sheath and tie the straps together with them for sharp edge protection and
elasticity in fit.
So far this has worked well for me without damage, but be careful to not
let the front plastic Fastex buckles rest on the gas tank surface while
riding without the bag installed. Tuck them to the side behind the front lip
of the tank. Otherwise the vibrating plastic will scuff your tank finish.
