Ric,   Your rule of thumb is slightly off.  Divide the rear sprocket number of teeth by the front.  43T / 15T = 2.8666  So one tooth on the front is equal to 2.8666 teeth on the rear.  Most KLR riding off road will benefit from using a 14T front sprocket.  I have only found a steel rear sprocket in a 44T, which won't make much of a difference.  You can get a larger aluminum rear sprocket but my experience is that aluminum just doesn't last like steel does. I have all the steel sprockets in stock for the KLR if you need one.   Fred

I'd prefer to drop a tooth up front than add in the rear (cheaper, quicker and perhaps no need to add links). I'm riding mostly trails and logging roads and just don't need that 5th gear at all. I'd like to run more in 2nd and 3rd but find myself needing gear "1.5" most of the time. TIA Ric Merry PS: What was the old rule of thumb for sprockets ? 1 tooth on front sprocket = 6 teeth on rear ? ps. I found the sweater under my camera in my tank bag, while gassing up on the return trip, fifty miles from home. Duh!
