1987.....has a crankshaft all to itself 1988.....beefed up engine cases with extra bolts between crank and countershaft, possibly lighter crank, different part number 1990.....improved the countershaft with longer splines for increased engagement with sprocket. 1996 midyear.....changed valve cover and installed a bracket to hold the "slipper" between the cam sprockets, changed crank shaft to heavier unit, improved the clutch with a great basket, added additional plates to clutch, improved the balancer adjustment mechanism including idler shaft and bearing, improved transmission which has a counter sprocket held on by a nut and 72 lbs. of torque. These are the major changes,

Hello Elden, Thanks for taking the time to help us out. I have all my parts for the Pre-96 balancer upgrade for my 85000 mile 1990 KLR. I am also getting a chain from Canada, (big savings...thanks Steve Pye) and am interested in this drive washer you mentioned. Will you be able to supply those drive washers to those of us who need them? I have not adjusted my balancer in over a year, maybe that is why the engine is still thumping? I have only adjusted it maybe 3-4 times total. I am thinking about a salvage engine for a temporary replacement while the original engine is studied for reliability and then upgraded. Thanks, Conall Fremont CA _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com Share information about yourself, create your own public profile at http://profiles.msn.com
