spark plugs, resistor/nonresistor

so in conjunction with thinking about this DirectHits stuff, and reading a
little about sparkplugs, it seems that non-resistor spark plugs provide a
more intense spark. i notice that resistor plugs are spec'd for canadian
klr's, but non-resistor plugs for the US ones. is there any difference in
the ignition to account for this? is this just a case of canadians having to
make do with weaker sparks? it makes sense, they're already stuck with
weaker sports teams and weaker beer, but at least they can probably buy
non-resistor plugs.
anyone ever notice a difference between resistor and non on their klrs? i've
had both on mine, and I can't feel a difference, but i haven't done any
long-term scientific testing.
