Current standards for English weight and volume comes from the fact that
water does weigh 8 lbs. per gallon. 32 oz. = 1 quart, 4 quarts (128 oz.) = a
gallon, etc.
Therefore, 128 oz., and 1 gallon, also = 8 lbs.

See other mail. The UK gallon used to be 1.2 x US gal. alas no more iit's
mostly liters.
Use to be interesting comparing aviation fuel prices, making sure which
gallon was being talked about.
