ca model klr - what's the difference?
Hello:
Hi, I'm Tom Vervaeke and I have an "L" model (said to the tune
of an AA meeting). On a recent Colorado DualSporters event, here
in Colorado, 2 of us have the dreaded "L" or "California" model.
Not sure how those things got here. The other owner, Chris, had all
of his "L" stuff removed at the dealer right after purchase. I
bought my 99 used from a friend and it's got all the stuff.
Is there any sort of rules about CA models being sold outside of
CA?
Has anyone done a detailed, step-by-step description of what
the pro's and con's are of removing the stuff? Besides a little
weight savings, is it worth it?
I know on sport bikes, etc.. the CA models often have different,
less-performing cams, etc.. Is this true of the KLR?
At the current time I have no complaints about performance, etc.. and
am just wondering if it's worth it to keep the stuff or remove it.
As an aside, I also own a BMW R1100GS which is pure stock. I am
actually happy to keep my catalytic converter, charcoal overflow
canister, etc.. as I think the cat and stuff really does eliminate
some pollutants. But, the KLR has no cat so not sure what I'd be
"helping".
Got my KLR 3 weeks ago with 1350 miles and I'm up to 4000 already.
I'm trying for 6-9K before the snow flies. Gotta get a Moab trip
in during October somehow.
Tom (in Colorado).
