fyi: plastic repair
Earlier this summer I dropped by KLR on its side and knocked loose the plastic side piece attached to the front of the gas tank. It remained attached by the top screw but the two plastic mounting flanges on the underside broke loose. After trying unsuccessfully to glue them back on with different types of adhesive and super glue, I finally was successful using a 25-watt soldering iron and a hot-melt glue stick. It's necessary to actually melt the original plastic while feeding in the hot-melt glue like solder or a welding rod. Once they weld cools, it forms a new plastic mix that is strong enough to stay together under normal riding conditions (at least it has for the last several thousand miles). At $80 a pop, I wasn't ready to give up on fixing the broken side piece. Just thought I'd pass this on to the group.
Also someone recently reported their plastic pieces were fading or changing color on a relatively new bike. My only experience with color change has been to plastic pieces that have been stressed or bent from dropping the bike. This always leaves behind a milky-white line or blotch in the plastic. These are war wounds. Show them with pride.
