pondering a purchase

I'm pondering buying a KLR650 and would appreciate the thoughts of the group. I have previously owned a BMW F650ST, which I enjoyed a lot, although I thought it was too expensive and I didn't like dealing with a dealership for repairs which made simple stuff a bit too complicated and pricey. My riding is principally the exploration of small, paved roads in rural Kentucky -- the smaller and twistier and gnarlier, the better. I'm happiest looking at a map or GPS and figuring out a new route in hilly territory. I liked the way I sat upright on the F650, and the light weight allowed me to toss it around readily. I also commute a lot, generally in an urban area, although sometimes doing a 50 mile ride mixed between small country roads and a bit of expressway. Kentucky, where I live, has some moderate amount of forest roads (Daniel Boone National Forest), although I don't contemplate an intense amount of offroad trail stuff, just gravel forest service roads. Occasionally, I take off for 2-4 days in the SE mountains, again looking for twisty, paved stuff. The ability to work in the unpaved roads could broaden my horizons. I don't ride two-up. I like the idea of smaller, lighter, simpler, and less expensive. A new BMW F650GS or an R1150GS would be tasty, but expensive, and would take me back into the Mercedes dealership syndrome. Does this make it sound as if a KLR650 could be suitable? If this topic is not of general interest, private e-mail is fine. Thanks, Jim in Louisville, Kentucky jimmoyer@...
