Subject: [DSN_klr650] Noisy Front End or Noisy Something
Time to tap into the knowledge and experience of this group again. You guys
are awesome and it's appreciated.
I have a 98 KLR that I purchased with about 6,000 miles on it. The bike was
immaculate and according to the previous owner, never ridden off road. If
you saw the bike you'd believe it. The bike is completely stock accept for
some new Maxxis tires that made a big difference in the off road riding. I
plan to do some more of the necessary mods this winter (i.e., skid plate,
fork brace, radiator guard, etc.). I do however have an immediate concern
about the front end. I do some pretty hard riding up here in New England.
Lots of rocks, ruts, fallen trees, stumps, etc. Lately the front end is
giving me a clunking feeling through the handlbars almost as though my front
end is loose. Last night some of my riding buddies picked up the front of
the bike and gave it a shake. They assured me it's not the front end. Some
suggested maybe the front brake caliper, maybe sloppy springs or maybe just
other stuff shaking around. I'm definitely feeling something and it's got me
a little concerned.
I go about 260 lbs. We ride pretty hard. Most of the guys in the group are
on XR650s, DR650s or KLX650s so you get the picture.
Has anybody had a similar experience with the front end? Is there something
else that might be loose that's causing the clunking sensation in the
handlebars while I'm riding real rough or on washboard terrain? Is it just
all the "stuff" that's mounted up front (speedometer, tachometer, fairing,
headlight, etc.)? Could it be the radiator or reservoir shaking loose? Is
there some other things mounted underneath that I can't see that should be
looked at? Or finally, am I just being paranoid?
I'm about ready to go to my trusted after hours mechanic for an opinion. We
got a big ride in Maine coming up in October and I don't want any problems.
Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. I've really
picked up some excellent information from this group and appreciate the help
I'm sure you'll give me with this.
Thanks,
