gps on crossbar blocks turn signal light on dash

Hello:
I'm a newbie with a slightly used 99 KLR I just picked up. I
added a Garmin Streetpilot GPS with a Touratech mount on the crossbar.
All of that is fine. What's not fine is that the GPS is big enough
that it blocks the indicator lights on the dash. Not a real big problem
as I leave the headlight on high all the time.
The problem is the turn signals. I often forget to turn them off
after a turn as I don't see the indicator light on the dash
reminding me.
I think an easy solution to the problem is to simply wire up some sort
of bright LED or light and stick it on top of the dash. This would be
wired somehow to the front turn signals and would flash if I leave
the turn signals on. I'm guessing it's going to be quite easy to tap
into each turn signal (as the wires are right there) and then just
put the LED with some velcro or glue on top of the dash, or, anyplace
where I would easily see it during normal riding.
What I'd like to know from some of you electrical experts is this:
Is there a way to have just a single LED that would blink if either
of the turn signals is on? Some sort of "cross wiring" or such. If
not, I'll have to purchase 2 small indicators from Radio Shack or such,
and splice them in. Would be neater and easier if I just had a single
LED/blinker as it's really just a reminder for me to use my left
hand thumb and turn the blinker off.
IMHO, a bike that leaves it turns signals on and isn't turning is
a real safety issue. In the last week it's happened to me a dozen
times and I just don't remember to always turn them off. I try to
remember but it's not easy at times when you're watching for
traffic, etc..
Any ideas for someone like me who's fairly electrically dim?
Thanks,
Tom
PS: My KLR was purchased 10 days ago with 1350 miles or so. It just
went over 3100 today. Loving it so far. Stock rear tire is almost
toast. Front tire is at least 50% remaining.
