Does anyone have any experience or opinions about keeping a motorcycle
carburetor clean by adding a small amount of fuel injector cleaner once or
twice a year when filling the tank. Professor?

Mike,
I'm leary of additives in general, especially AUTOMOTIVE stuff
that may work great in cars or trucks, but may be bad for our
bikes. I remember a rash of clutch slippage problems many years
ago when m/c riders decided that STP oil additive just had to be
the hot setup (what's a wet-clutch setup? you mean my car doesn't
have one? OH!).
What works in cars may not work well for cycles. I know next to
nothing about injectors, but I think they they atomize the fuel/
air mixture under pressure. Our CV carbs don't work this way.
Could the chemical cleaners in injector cleaner do any harm to
rubber and/or plastic parts? Let's see, the enricher has a small
rubber diaphragm and of course the carb slide assembly with its
attached diaphragm costs over $100 to replace. Ever use carb
choke cleaner & see what it does to rubber or plastic? Maybe
some listers have used injector cleaner with good results, it's
too chancy for me.
I prefer to use a quality fuel filter with an internal bronze
filter element. Draining the float bowl for winter storage aids
in preventing buildup in the off season. Adding a small amount
of gas line anti-freeze from time to time helps remove water
condensation from the fuel system. I heard many people say that
adding a bit of Marvel Mystery oil to their gas does good things.
I never was able to find out specifically what those good things
were.
I may be a sucker for gas company marketing, but I beleive that
all gasoline blends include a detergent additive package to help
keep the fuel system clean.
Hope this helps.

ps: Never fillup if a fuel delivery truck is at the gas station.
The refills stir up accumulated sediment in the station's
storage tanks & it takes a while for it to settle to the
bottom again. (yeah, I know the pumps have fuel filters,
but ...)

I received my Darien yesterday after over an 8 week backlog. Haven't
even had a chance to get it out of the box yet, but tomorrow will be
the changing of the guard; My 3 year old First Gear Kilimanharo will
be retired and a new, red Darien will take its place.
