Something that has been kinda bothering me for while on the KLR and I
submit to the wisdom of the collective:
Q. There is a small hole (3/16") just below the coolant return line on
the right hand side of the cylinder case. What is this hole for?, and
should it be open? It does not appear to have any threads in it, but if
you put your finger over it with the engine running, it definitely
sounds different. I have looked in the manual and supplement, but can't
find any info on it. What the heck is it for?

I agree. massive clear cutting is not pretty. But again, blame the
government. Why? Because instead of opening forests across the country to
logging, they restrict it to only allow it on private property and limited
public property in certain area's. So they have to cut down as many tress
as possible in order to stay in business in a concentrated area. The
solution is to open strategic portions of ALL forests except in National
Parks to logging and firewood cutting, and only allow them to cut in
sections that would make excellent fire breaks. Its called responsible
management.
To make everyone happy, you use a pyramid approach. A third of public
lands for recreation, a third for commercial use, and a third for
preservation. The preservation would be to freeze the national parks and
monuments (no new ones) with no logging, and allow ORV's restricted access
to major dirt roads. The commercial use would be as described in the
previous paragraph. The recreation would be to open all trails outside of
national parks and monuments to all forms of use, depending on each trails
condition and location. The trails would be scaled accordingly. Some
would be for hiking only, then hiking and mountain biking, then hiking,
mountain biking and two wheel motorized vehicles, then hiking, mountain
biking, two wheel motorized vehicles, and four wheel vehicles. A common
sense approach can make everybody happy but the extremists and malcontents,
because they are never happy.
