I keep thinking exhaust leak, but it sounds like you cheaked that out pretty
well. My KLR backfired alot when one of the header nuts came loose, the
header actually has negative pressure between pulses and will draw air in
thru a small leak ,doesn't take much.

This suggests to me a leak in the intake system, which in this case means the adapter between the carb and the head. Hi,
My A13's idle also fluctuates sometimes. It varies 200-300 rpm from time to
time, but it doesn't do it all the time. Otherwise it runs well with no
backfiring. You may have seen some of my earlier posts that detail the mods
I've done for comparison to your bike.
Do you have stock jets in your carb? Maybe it is running a little lean.
