I wonder what K&N had to say about this.
This appears to be about as scientific as a user test can get.

I have worked at a cement plant for the last 10 years, we make dust out of
rocks. For the last three years I have been driving a 65 ton quarry truck
it hauls 65 tons, fully loaded it weighs approx. 250,000 lbs ) and have
spent alot of time around the garage and with the mechanics. The plant is
around 40 years old and has always used paper filters and still does, my
truck cost about $750,000, they buy the best filters available to protect
them. Cement dust is hellishly abrasive.

I was under the impression (perhaps due to K&N advertising) that most
desert racers use K&N filters on both two and four-wheel vehicles.
If these filters allowed so much fine grit through the element I think
this would compromise reliability in longer events, like the Baja 1000.
What do they use in Paris/Dakar?
I have run K&N's in all my two/three/four wheeled vehicles (except for
the KLR, haven't gotten around to it yet) for the time that K&N's have been
readily available. While this is only anecdotal, I have not noticed any
top-end wear out of the norm. I have kept several big-bore road-burners more
than 50,000 miles with better than normal service and no abnormal oil
consumption or other signs of abrasive top-end wear.

I know I'm repeating myself but 15 years and 125,000 miles with absolutely no
problems caused by excess wear has to count for something. I will NEVER use
anything but KN filters.

I'm happy that you're happy, but I have 2 problems with using K&N;
- I do not understand how it can let so much air through, but still filter
as well.
- If they were as good as advertised, then why aren't they used as OEM on
every gas/diesel powered vehicle out there. Hell, the leaner condition they
would naturally allow would make it easier to smog certify said vehicles,
correct?
I'll stick with my paper and oil foam thank you very much. To each there
own though, if you're happy, then keep using them!

Maybe the same reason top of the line Z rated Michelins aren't OEM...... cost?
