charging system inquiry

Post by Jim Hyman » Sat Aug 05, 2000 2:42 am

My inquiry was to find a reliable source for alternator upgrades. While Electrex appears to have been helpful in trying to assist the two listers with their problems, both Electrex charging system installations are running as total loss electrical systems. The stators require the purchaser to fabricate their own sealing grommets for the stator's wires and in one case, the incorrect connector was supplied. Both riders had installation problems with the stator due to the Electrex unit being 5 mm thicker than the stock unit and that longer mounting bolts with special heads are required to successfully mount the stator. This information was not included with the stators. Most riders looking for an upgrade want to add higher wattage headlight bulbs and other accessories including heated hand grips and heated riding apparel. One rider recently left on a trip from San Diego to Alaska, with a brand new battery and the Electrex stator and regulator/rectifier installed. His battery was electrically drained and was forced to perform field surgery to reinstall his stock stator and regulator- rectifier. His charging system is now fine with the stock units installed on his late 90's KLR650. His electrical system is stock, with the addition of heated hand grips (45 watts) and an LED voltage monitor. Another rider has a 1988 KLR650 and his Electrex system also killed his battery. His CDI ignition unit has also gone haywire after he installed the Electrex stator and regulator/rectifier. There is also skepticism about the increased output for the Electrex upgrade. They don't have any specifications for the maximum wattage output for their stators for the KLR.. It was my hope that Ricky Stators could be an alternative source to the Electrex units for a straight forward installation that works, without buyers having to spend numerous additional hours trying to make it work. Thank you for your help. Jim ----------------------------- From: "Ricky Stator" To: "Jim Hyman" jim-we carry the electrex stators and have had no problems with them what-so-ever and that includes the rec/reg-are you running some other loads other than stock?-please advise since we have good luck with them perhaps you are experiencing problems caused by some other components-thanks-ricky -----Original Message----- From: Jim Hyman To: stator@...
