klr's featured on tsn, tires, dull plastic, headlight upgrade
Hey Listers,
I've been away from my computer a lot this summer and haven't been keeping
up with the list much. I did get a short bike trip in a few weeks ago. I
went down to southern BC (Nelson, Castlegar, Slocan, etc.) Lots of great
motorcycling roads down there. The road from Castlegar to Silverton was one
of the most fun roads I've been on. A friend and I swapped bikes for a
while. I got to ride his 93 Honda VFR 750. I'd never ridden anything buy
my KLR and the MSF trainer bike I learned on. I really enjoyed riding a
bike with more power. It's got me thinking about new exhaust, jet kit, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I was still happy to get back on my KLR. I just wish
it had more get up and go.
Anyways, tonight I was channel surfing and caught the tail end of a segment
on a motorcycle show on TSN. They were featuring a group of 4 or 5 guys
touring around northern BC and up into the Yukon on KLR's. One of the bikes
had Tim Bernard's yellow side racks and highway pegs. Are any of these guys
on the list? I didn't catch their names.
Tire update: small cracks are starting to appear between the treads on my
front Avon Gripster. The tire has about 20,000 km on it now. I thought I
could get through the season with it but the cracks kind of scare me. Is
this a sign that my tire is going to fail soon?
Faded plastic: I'm not sure why but I am getting some dull spots on the
plastic parts of my 96 KLR. Any tips for bringing back a nice finish?
Headlight upgrade: After reading through the archives I decided to install
a brighter headlight bulb. I went with a 80/100. In the archives it looked
like some of you had installed such bulbs with no wiring mods and no
problems. It was great while it lasted. After a half hour, the fuse blew.
I returned the bulb for a refund and put a 55/60 back in. I'm thinking my
next lighting mod will be to duct-tape a flashlight to my helmet and mount a
candle on my front fender. That shouldn't blow any fuses.
Over and out,
Al

I agree with Tom. I have the Western Handilift that uses an air compressor. Not only is it invaluable for bike maintenance, but it's an instant work bench too.
