Todd, I had similar noises. Turns out there were a few adjacent links that had lost their ability to go smoothly and tightly around the counter sprocket. I hadn't been on top of cleaning and lubing, and the bike use to sit for long periods of time in the winter (in IA). The cure was a new chain about 10,000 miles sooner than if I had kept on top of the maintenance. Richard in Tucson 94 KLR659 86 VFR750

Thanks for the feedback, gives me plenty to check. Yes the tire does possibly rub the muffler, and it does howl on the road. Will check links etc. and possibly replace the chain and sprockets anyway. The thrumming did reduce some with riding today, but still remains. Have a funeral tomorrow so don't know when I'll get to it. Great list y'all.

One place you could put up data regarding service items for the KLR is http://www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/ It has separate listings for different makes and models. Right now there are more Trans Alps registered than KLRs,and they only sold Transalps for 2 years (in the US). Those T/A owners sure are loyal. We should have more KLRs than 29.
