John:
An itermediate step you may want to take is trying on of the new Xenon bulbs
rated at 60/55W (stock). I used a Sylvania 9003 CB bulb that can be
purchased at most auto part stores for under 15 bucks. This bulb was much
better than the stock one IMO. Some users are using higher wattage bulb with
no ill effects. Check the archives for more info.

Has anyone used a higher wattage bulb in their KLR. I was thinking about
putting a 130/90W in. Just wondering if the bike puts out enough juice to
power something that high. Any responses will be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm using a Piaa Super Blue (I think that is the name) that draws the same as a 55/60 but supposedly has the output of a 110/100. Seems to be true. Very bright light. Fres has them at hsi shop.

There are many different halogen H4 bulbs out there for the KLR. The standard 55/60 H4 is DOT approved, all the rest are not. They range from the halogen 55/60, 55/100, 80/100 and 90/130. Most of these come in either standard or heavy duty models. The heavy duty models should last longer and resist vibration better than the standard bulbs. There are two Xenon bulbs, a 55/60 and the 55/100. These bulbs will have a slight blue color and give a whiter light. The PIAA bulb, like Gino said, will put out more light while using the same current as the standard 55/60 bulb. There is also a brighter halogen tail light bulb. The H1157 tail light is rated at 15/50 watts. Fred (shedding a little light on the light subject)

I am new to the list and currently do no own a KLR650 but am looking at. I own a Yamaha Venture, Yamaha Grizzly, and a Honda XR600.
I just moved out of town and have 4 miles of gravel road to traverse each day in my 34 mile comute. I was wondering how many miles can you expect to get on this 650? And what you all getting in gas mileage? I do not like riding my Venture on gravel and it only gets in the lower 30's for gas mileage.
thanks.

Jim asks again... Has anyone used, or know of, a headlight bulb for the KLR that has the
normal (legal) low beam wattage, but a higher 100-110W high beam. I used to
buy these for my Concourse, but have not seen one for the KLR.
