two-up dual sport nklr

Post by InWoods13@aol.com » Tue Aug 01, 2000 8:39 pm

Hail listers! The better other & I did a great two-up ride this past weekend at the 4th annual devil's creek dual sport weekend, in Brooksville, Florida. It was a non competitive event to raise school supplies for needy children in areas surrounding Brooksville. The event was engineered by a hard working fellow lister, "Swampy." The better other (Lori) & I did the Saturday ride, designed for big adventure touring bikes & those that ride two-up - the Sunday ride's not recommended for two-up & a definite challenge for seasoned KLR pilots, especially if you follow Swampy (he likes the water). Was a blast! Our mini group consisted of two DR350's, two XR650L's & the mity thunderdog. Good advise here, on going two-up....Part 1) when you hit deep ruts, gun it...sand, gun it...water/mud...the throttle (& a smile from the motorcycle gods) will pull you thru! :) Part 2) I doubt that anybody can get completely comfortable piloting a two-up off road trip & don't recommend it unless you're seasoned & have a decent idea of what you'll be facing on your ride. Practice Alot if you plan on doing one. The practice rides don't have to be long so long as they're many. The thought of dumping it with the better other on back kills me & that keeps me real frosty every minute of the ride, to say the least. We both had a great time. It's unique to be so close with your better other & never speak a word. I hope to learn one day, what it's like to ride with her...soon as I can find a XT225/XR250 & see if she warms to being a pilot. The weekend included a great barbecue dinner, scavenger hunt with prizes..one lucky fellow won a nice dual sport helm. Lori won a neat tee shirt from the "Seminole Wind" ride here, last year...and thunderdog won....Yes! A much needed set of Gel Grips! (the glues still drying) Met lots of good folks at the event over the weekend. Highly recommend the it for any that can venture this far south, at this time, next year. We'll be there tenting it, rain or shine, & Camp KLR would welcome the company! Would be neat to see a KLR contingent there next year. Happy to answer any questions on or off list about lodging, ect... All best Scott A14 "thunderdog" Sorrento
