First:
My thanks to those who replied both on and off list and to the
collective for providing a forum.
Second:
After going through a lot of different people and running around, I
ended up talking to the owner. While being very emphatic that he was
not taking responsibility for the situation he did agree to take
action.
The results:
They have replaced the missing part at no charge.
They will perform the next major servicing (20,000km and all two and
four year steps) at no charge. I'll hit that mileage this fall.
What's next:
He has agreed that there may be some slight degradation of longevity.
He also pointed out that if any bike can take that kind of abuse then
it is the KLR. If they find anything wrong with the bike on the
servicing then, as he put it, "we'll see." So far, it seems like both
of us have gotten off lucky.
Thanks again,
Daniel
