With the water restrictions here, I havent washed my bikes all summer.
Except when I find a creek crossing, I can splash it off.

Simple Green or any of a bunch of citrus-based cleaners diluted half-and-half
and sprayed on does fine on any bike, spray on full-strength on tough greasy
areas.
Haven't waxed the KLR yet, use Honda Pro detailer or Amor-All liquid
polish/cleaner to make it shine.
Here a chain (and cable) lube idea that works for me: Silicone or liquid
Teflon spray. The liquid Teflon (Tri-Flo, available from bicycle shops)
displaces water and is recommended for metal and rubber parts (sez right here
on the can) for lubrication and preservation purposes. Spray it on while
chain is hot, wipe off before next ride. Chain has been adjusted once in 3000
miles, at about 500 miles, and still looks new and hasn't stretched a bit.

Kawasaki cleans all bikes at the factory, I don't think you have to do it
again.

yes, Castrol Super Clean damages the clearcoat on aluminum parts and makes
it look etched...don't ask me how I know...

Daryl hoses his down after every ride... me... I don't take nearly enough
pictures so I want to remember the places I ride by keeping parts of them
with me.

I've used Simple Green, Castrol Super Clean and S100. S100 is
specifically for cycles and is available at most BMW and Honda dealers.
There are all equally good IMO. S100 seemed to detoriate(sp) the stock
KLR fork boots though. Be careful with what you spray on the fork boots
if there are still original, mine split apart after cleaning with S100.
Coincidence? maybe. Water down simple green or the Castrol stuff so it
isn't full strength.

i use enough of the hose to wash of the worst of the dust, then a quick wipe
with an old tshirt. my bike is so freakin' ugly (y2k model) it doesn't
really inspire a lot of careful attention.

What ever you do dont try to clean off stubborn bugs
with WD40 like they do on the TV. It makes the plastic
go all hazy...sob...sob

Clean a KLR? You're supposed to clean them? I usually knock off the real heavy mud and leave the rest. Is that KLR abuse?
