help! my klr died!

Post by dan shaw » Thu Jul 20, 2000 8:58 am

hello again, so ive got some problems with the biek. maybe someone here knows what the problem is. first off i have a 89 klr with nearly 50,000 miles. ive never had to do any engine work other then valve adjusting. the other day i was on along ride back to boston and the bike ran out of gas. i swithched to reserve yet the bike wouldnt start back up easily at all. eventually it did, and i rode to the gas station and filled the tank. about 20 min later the engine quits while im riding. i try in vain to start it. sometimes it putters but mainly is jjust turning over with no firing. i let it cool and it started for about 10 seconds and then died again. i had to abandon the bike and take the bus home after the batery died from trying to start it. im thinking a clogged carb or something with the fuel valve. any ideas anyone? thanks! dan shaw __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? help! my klr died!

A few weeks ago, suddenly out of nowhere mine started sputtering so bad it wouldn't idle. It was very hard to start, and wouldn't run below about 2000 RPM at all, and ran like s#$t above that. I did the quick stuff: exercise the "choke", switch between full and reserve, flip the kill, etc. Next thing I know it's running just fine. Next day, the same thing, and it took a lot longer to get it going this time. Rode it straight home from there, and could feel the problem coming off and on while going home. I never let the RPM's drop below 2500 when I had to stop on the way home (only once or twice). Since it would run (however badly), above 2000, but not at all below, I figured it was NOT the petcock vacuum system. Fred also says that he never hears of it going bad, even though it seems like people are always concerned about it. It "felt" excessively rich, I can't tell you what I mean by this, it just comes from having dozens of motorcycles. I took the carb apart, and I found some [gasoline] lacquer in the coasting enricher. I figured the problem might be that it was getting stuck open. Cleaned the whole carb thoroughly, and the bike has run just fine ever since; four or five hundred miles. It starts better now anyway. I feel confident that this was the problem on MY bike, but just like Fred said, I would also recommend cleaning the carb thoroughly. It only took about twenty minutes to do the whole job; you don't need to remove it from the bike to thoroughly clean it. Good luck, and let us know how it works out. Steve (clean carb) Anderson
