Sad to say, but if you are camping/hiking in Grizzly country you are better off to carry a gun; and a big gun at that! I always carry a short barrel 3" mag chambered 12 gauge pump with 000 buckshot. He was camped in a tent in his back yard! Also, a young woman was stalked and cornered by a cougar at Tatla Lake in the West Chilcotin area of BC. The cougar was scared off before any harm could come to the woman. A few weeks ago a man was eaten by wolves (the first recorded wolf attack on a human in BC, maybe even all of North America) while he slept on a beach near Tofino on Vancouver Island. It seems people were feeding the wolves and they lost part of their fear of humans (??) so the man sleeping on the beach was an inviting snack. Due to our gun laws in Canada, all we have to protect ourselves is a can of bear spray! As for this grizzly in Hyder. This bear was traped a couple of days before but escaped. Due to goverment cut backs, the officers could not respond in time to desroy the bear the first time. Cheers.
