A newish bike would tolerate this better than an old bike. Since the KLR has a high front mudguard, it is easy to wedge something like a piece of 4x2 between the tyre and 'guard before strapping down. This way, you only end up compressing the tyre a bit instead of having to squeeze down the suspension so that it doesn't bounce on the soft springs.

I am hitting about 5K on the clock myself and my rear is looking like a replacement is in order early next year, front another 5K at least as it is off the ground more than the rear :^). I ride mainly road two up. I like to un-compress the forks when ever I can, but you are right, how can it be different than trailering it another 10 hours or so? I think a good measure would be to relieve the compression when ever possible. Every 1K of road (or less if off road) I wire brush the chain with WD40 to clean and warm up the chain by riding for a bit and give it a good lubing with chain wax. I always lube after riding and not before, that way the chain is warm and the lube penetrates better. I show no visual signs of wear on the chain or sprockets yet. --- Rev.
