Tim, the KLR is a fickle beast when packing so my advice is to use a very
careful approach. First try to get as much weight low and forward as
possible...that means Aerostitch pannier bags...the large ones work well.
Then a good tank bag (not low but forward) a Wolfman Explorer does well
here. Now on the back go light...Tim or Arne's racks and a pair of Ortlieb
clip-ons or dry saddlebags...finally, a Top of the Line Rack with a pair of
medium Aerostich dry duffels...plenty of room for a light tent
sideways...this will set you back about a markie and a half ($750)...but it
is a tight nice setup...and you can always sell the stuff to the list if you
want to go another way...

i've got a small, generic tankbag which was found by a friend in the back of
his garage and works well. however, some tank bags don't work. for
saddlebags, i love the ortleib drybag saddlebags. very very water- and
dust-proof. on the luggage rack, i bolted on a Rubbermaid Action Packer
about three years ago and it's been through the mill and still works great.
waterproof, locks and $11 at Walmart. still alot of room on the back seat
and atop the action packer. alot of people say weight low and forward, and
i'm sure it's ideal, but this setup has blasted around everywhere without a
problem yet. also note the action packer holds alot more weight than the
recommended limit on the rack. this hasn't been a problem for me, but YMMV.

Use whatever works for you.
If you don't get bad symptoms then the fuel is good enough.
I suspect the 91 octane spec covers some of the more extreme situations
a KLR might get into. As well, the octane rating of the fuel you get
from the pump can vary somewhat, so I guess that if using 91 you would
be giving yourself some leeway.
