balance shaft tensioner problem

Hi folks, I posted a couple of months ago that I was about to buy a '95 KLR650.. I bought it , and love it! Getting back into riding after over 16 years layoff has been quite an experience. I won't bore you all by waxing too lyrical about this, but it's been great, and the bike's ideal for me. However, one problem. Not long after I got the bike (which had 23,500km on it), a deep slow rhythmic vibration/noise started. I guessed it must be the famous balance shaft chain, performed the tensioner adjustment, and all was well. Unfortunately, every couple of hundred kilometers it's needed it again. I decided the adjuster mechanism must be 'on the way out' and thought I'd get it looked at when I get the bike serviced. This was not to be, 'cause I've just had to adjust it again, and Something Happened. As usual, I slackened the bolt off 3 turns, and when I tightened it, after 3 turns, there was a little resistance, and then none, as if something had sheared, or as if some sort of cam had been forced 'over the top'. I wasn't using massive pressure never have. The adjuster bolt now rotates freely in either direction with finger pressure. Obviously my adjuster is 'stuffed'. I've phoned a few Kawasaki dealers here in Sydney, but nobody's convinced me that they really know the part I'm talking about! Any advice would be welcome. I won't be able to afford to get it fixed for a few weeks anyway. Oh yeah I haven't started it. I'll get a trailer or something to take it to be fixed. Apologies for the length of all this, and many thanks, Col (Colin) Freeman classic@...
