cancun 'cycle rentals? (nklr)

I haven't been to Cancun (my mother lived there for several years however), but I never had too much trouble finding motorcycle rentals in any Central American towns that were popular tourist haunts, even pretty small ones in Guatemala, etc. Don't expect to find any 650's though; all I ever rented were 200cc Yamahas etc., with a few 250's. They usually want your passport, and a major credit card for deposit. Bring your passport; if you don't have one, get one. I know, I know, Americans don't "NEED" a passport to go to Mexico, but take my word for it, you are MUCH better off with one. It will help with so many *little* things, like renting motorcycles. I am certain that none of the places I rented from would have rented them to me without it. Many places insist on holding it until you return the bike; I always bring lot's of photocopies, and have persuaded some of them to take the copies on a few occasions. I had a little Yammer in Panajachel, Guatemala for a couple of weeks, and was fortunate enough to talk the renters into accepting a photocopy. If the police there caught you without your passport, you went down to the police station, they would not listen to ANY explanations until you got to the station. Definitely a bad time to be holding anything that might get you into more trouble, as many of the foreigners in Panajachel were. I talked to a German in San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, that got harassed by the Panajachel cops in a restaurant (the cops would periodically "sweep" the local tourist haunts looking for people with expired visa's etc.), had left his passport with a current visa in his hospedaje (hotel kind of), got hauled to the station were they found some weed, and he got tossed in the can for a month down there. Sorry, I digress. Point 1 being: Bring a passport, carry it with you securely, you don't know when it will be helpful. Point 2 being: Motorcycles will probably be easy to rent in Cancun. But you will probably need to heed point 1. Steve A.
