Sounds like a twitchy fan switch to me, it is screwed into the bottom of the radiator and can't be very expensive. This would be a good time to change the engine coolant since most of it is going to come out anyway. Drain the block as well and use high quality coolant, I use Honda's mixed 50/50 with DISTILLED water. cheerio Morgan

Andy, what a bummer, man!! I have had the same worry, although the fan has always kicked off after a short while. But, I haven't yet really had the same conditions you had to test out this poblem, so I don't know. Probably a sensor is bad. But don't quote me. Good luck!! Rob----99KLR Andy Watts wrote:

There's all sorts of (apparently) crazy options out there for serious long distance people. I have ridden a couple of 1000 milers on my Laverda 668. On the first a young lady finished 1/2 hour outside time on a Vespa 200. On the second the same young lady only managed 400m on her Italjet dragster before holing the piston :-(. A friend always runs his 1980 R80GS, due to it's ease of use (a big softie, just like a KLR!) heated handlebars and accessory lights. It has been jumping out of gear for 3 years now, but seems ok in top!?! I have to say that the Laverda is particularly unsuitable, for the last 4 hours or so on both runs my hands were numb, and I could not hold a coffee cup the following day... This is the hard work aspect you mention, peaky and limited power delivery (not to mention a racer crouch!) combined with tight windy country roads; small country you see :-). The hard work aspect on NZ roads would make a KLR a near perfect choice as there is no high speed to speak of (no straights you see, it's a terrible shame really :-))) and the road surface is generally poor, like most of the populace! In 2001 I have a 1500 miler to look forward to. I'm pleased this is idea has a precedent! And after all that, I decided against the KLR I was looking at (too many miles on it), so I'll go back to quietly lurking again now and look for another one! Matt.
