Wilsons Sandbox

I've noticed that recently my bike has begun burning oil. Still too early to calculate how much it's going through. I know my valves are set loose, maybe a tad too loose (beyond spec) by a .001 or two. Would loose valves cause the burning? I have never noticed oil smoke but my rear fender by the exhaust outlet has black on it. Thanks! Karl
