springs and washers

(That got me into wondering...has anyone ever pre-loaded their clutch
springs with washers?)
you start limiting spring travel doing that. Have done it before though
with some of my old Triumph and Beezers.. but couldn't afford the new
spring then..... and most of the time even find them...
