That got me into wondering...has anyone ever pre-loaded their clutch
springs with washers?

Not on a KLR but on many, many other Jap bikes - mostly hopped-up Hondas. A
washer maybe .020-.030 thick will work wonders. My riding goes way back
before you could get heavy duty springs. You have to make sure the springs
don't compress solid or it won't work. While the side cover was off and the
clutch accessible, I would take the steel plates and rub them on a concrete
surface to break the glaze (use a figure 8 pattern) and clean up the fiber
plates. This method extended the clutch life many fold. With this mod,
instead of slip slidin' away, you go jerk, grab, jerk...... Power shift to
2nd and wheel in ya face kinda action - I like it! Your results may vary.
Knot - who used to slip but is now a jerk.

Hey Nick,
Don't let a little old back surgery stop you. I had a partial discectomy
of L5-S1 last thanksgiving. A bunch of other stuff in there while he was
in there but I can't pronounce that stuff, much less spell it.
I feel great, better than I have in the past 10 years, and hell I'm only 29
(today is my B-Day, and yes a Mach One is on the way

)
Of course YMMV but I haven't given anything up for more than 3 months
(roughly). I am extremely punishing to my body as well. Hockey, Downhill
Skiing (Double Blacks), used to roadrace, dirt biking, KLR'ing, two
children, improper lifting of my wife across the room (you don't need the
details), hunting near everything with a pulse and fur or feathers
(dragging/carrying elk quarters for more than a 1/4 mile isn't easy). The
only thing that saves me is that I work out and take care of my back. I
don't think I'll ever be trying the P-D though. There's a new motor-sports
park in Albuquerque, so I may be into roadracing again..(couple/few
years).... at least to teach my son and be his support team.
Best of Luck to you and make sure you trust your surgeon, as in here's my
life for a couple of hours, please be careful.
