bmw's plastic tanks

Post by aches@deltech.net » Sat Jun 17, 2000 9:18 am

I remember the early plastic BMW R1100GS tanks and their bubbling decals. That had to be embarrassing for BMW, not to mention expensive, when they replaced them all with metal tanks under warranty. I was one of the lucky ones that didn't have that problem enabling me to keep my 6.5 gal tank and not get one of the 5.5 gal tanks they replace them with. Seemed like a paint affair. If the tank passed the paint test with the first coat, then no problem, if it got a second coat, then decal and paint problems,. mainly paint as most of the GS riders took off the decal cause it looked much better without it splattered on the side of the tank. But a larger Green tank in plastic for the KLR is interesting. Especially now that we know how to get ALL the fuel out of the tank due to a members experimenting and passing it on to us. -- Best Regards & Happy Trails Andy Chesley @ 57 and ticking Y2KLR650 @ 4K sMiles 97 R11RA (Amiga) @ 14K Miles So Many Roads, So Little Time http://members.deltech.net/aches/
