Went back to the shop and had them put in with the proper bearing driver. Shop charged me $15.00 to remove and replace the bearings. Seemed cheap because I know that I am more than capable of damaging the bearings doing it myself. Regards Kurt Grife

My first job at Boeing was very similar to this "problem", except it involved tires loaded to max weight at max speed (270mph). When the tread flexed, it built up so much heat the tires flew apart (=problem). I was given a stack of equations which described a standing wave in a spinning tire. The task was to mathematically model this "multi-degree-of-freedom system". I called one of the large aircraft tire manufacturers, and whipped out my math. I still remember it clearly. He said "well, you're talking about a problem that a full-time staff of perhaps 20 to 30 brilliant PhDs has been working on, specifically, for 20 to 30 years. Frankly I don't think you're going to figure it out." I found out that my math was rather puny in the real world. My recollection is that after removing the snap rings, the bearings had to be needed a combination of prying outward and driving from the inside of the hub You can't remove the spacer until at least one of the bearings is removed. I think I pried one bearing out, and then used a brass bar and a hammer to hit the spacer and use it to drive the other bearing out. Of course I was replacing the bearings for new. Smacking on the inner race of a bearing will definitely create flat spots on the balls and races. See the picture in the KLR 600 base manual on page 8-7. Depending on how many miles are on your bearings, you might consider replacing them. ( I can't remember the sizes, but they are a standard bearing and can be procured from other places than motorcycle dealers. Search the archives for the sizes.) In any way, if you destroy them removing them, don't worry about it, just replace them, but repack the new ones with a better grease. Jeff
