[quote] i've been looking into these thingies, and a good choice (obviously requiring some mods) might be the Motorola Talk About Distance. it has a five mile range. you might be expected to have an amateur license to use it (easy to get, if you decide to play fair), but not to buy it... _pete = ===========
Anybody out here has any recommendation on purchasing 2-way radios? I am looking for something with rugged body and extended range (at least 2 miles). Brands? Thanks, pete@...

The TalkAbout Distance does not have the capability to use repeaters,
which rules it out in my opinion.
GMRS radios (like this one) require a GMRS license - different from a ham
ticket.

i guess it depends on what you want it for. most people don't wish to
communicate with anyone more than 5 miles or so away while on their bike.

Just don't run that synthetic oil until well after the motor is broken in, and you have several thousand miles on it. Jeff
