thanks for the movie review. As far as your last paragraph, you must consider that some of us motorcycle buffs have been thoroughly alienated by consumer society and don't watch movies much, if ever...... also, since I do enjoy good entertainment, I suppose I prefer to create my own (riding a motor helps for this) instead of paying a few bucks for entertainment created by some investor-owned Holloywood movie production corporation. Just a thought to consider. Want to see a great biker movie? Try "Masters of Menace". You'll find it at video stores with large old inventories.

Mark, you're right. The Movie Sucks Big Time! Typical situation: in the ads they show the best parts cut together and it looks good, but when you sit down in the theater you're ready to vomit after the movie. And the sad thing's that everybody involved in the movie cashes in big time, while the viewers are big loosers. I hate that stupid Hollywood. I rather go for a ride next time. I saw it a couple of weekends ago. First of all the movie would have been over in the first scene..if he fell... OK so I'm in the theater preparing myself for stunts that are IMPOSSIBLE.... Thus Mission Impossible... living up to the name so far. I went to be entertained... I left entertained. I am terrible about nit picking on movies (my wife will attest to that) but I felt that the movie wasn't about having realistic stunts, it was about a spy with impossible missions. I too didn't like the rear-ending of the Umph, and it wouldn't have resulted in what happened next but OK it's a movie. I thought the chase scenes were excellent. OK so they changed tires. OK so they used wires on several of the jumps, I'd expect that. I appreciated it for the skill of the riders. I think a KLR was better suited to the needs of the "Bad Guys" but hey seeing a dirt bike performing those stunts would have far less interesting, just watch ESPN2 to get that. Those stunt men have my hat off to them. It takes a good deal of skill to handle that many ponies, that much weight and totally the wrong steering geometry and suspension in the dirt. Of course the 360 stoppie was impossible, while unloading a clip with one hand. But it was impressive to watch and there will be a lot more squids busting their bikes up trying it. The high speed smoke job was 100% possible, the slides were as well. Speaking of the slides, ever get crossed up on pavement? Dirt yes, pavement no = high side! - unless you have the skill to do it, I certainly don't.... too many high sides on the race track for me thank you. Difference is that they were breaking and I was accelerating, but still hard nonetheless. I think as a m/c buff I had a better appreciation for those scenes than my mother in-law, who said, "they had different tires in every part of the m/c scene". I think that as a buff I was able to look past those obvious differences and be mindful of the skills required. They used three different tires, dirt, street and DS's, the DS's looked like Gripsters, can anyone confirm? Now the one thing that really bothered me, was how did Tom come up with two masks and a voice chip right after the grenade went off in the tunnel? AND fast enough to answer on the radio right after the explosion, now that was impossible. And how was it that the babe in that movie didn't show a little more of her body, totally un-realistic. I wouldn't go see it again at $8 plus popcorn and drink and M&M's and $5 in quarters in video games for my son (yeah right) but I would let my mother get me the video for X-Christmas. I did leave entertained. I think I really had more of a problem with how obvious certain things were and how there didn't seem to be much effort toward hiding things like the wires and the tire changes. I just think the movie industry can be lazy and leave things unkempt figuring we are all oblivious anyway, so why bother. With so much money being spent on these type of movies, I guess I just figure they could try a little harder to trick me into thinking these guys are skilled enough to ride that type of bike in the sand, or able to fly without wires, etc... I know it's not real, and in general not possible to actually do these things, so at least leave me wondering how in they world they pulled it off!! Paul A13 As for the scene in the cave after explosion, I agree, where in the world did he come up with the masks and how would he have know who he would end up dragging in there. I don't think he used the voice chips for that scene though, he had the guys mouth taped shut, and he only spoke a couple of words...not sure there. Probably some special agent spy kit that you can put generate these things easily but they decided to leave that part out as it would not have contained a lot of action. Dash Weeks wrote:

I think it was better that they left the knobby vs. slick very apparent. If I had seen a large roost and good control in the dirt then cut to a street tire shot I would have been even more ticked that they even tried to fool me. Now a quick pit stop will change the tires but I wonder how Tom did it while being chased

I agree that some stunts should be left for the audience to wonder, "don't try this at home sort of thing" But in hind sight I would have loved to mount a tiger toothed tire on my road race bike for a little in-field fun at the track. He certainly had a voice chip on his neck in that scene, he pulled it off just after the mask, he was running down the hall though so it was easy to miss. He spoke over the radio and to the main bad guy in person about him not being able to talk since he broke his jaw. Hey, moviegoers; A lot of older movies with far less sophisticated special effects had good bike action scenes. In "Coogan's Bluff," a standard-issue Clint Eastwood cop flick, Clint chases a bad guy through Central Park in NYC. Both guys are on late-60's 650 Triumphs, and if you're paying attention you can catch a few frames of Clint dropping his bike which should have found their way to the cutting-room floor. "Electra Glide in Blue" has Harley police rigs running through desert arroyos at a respectable pace, and I think Robert Blake did his own stunts, little as he is. "The Great Escape" has those famous jump scenes that everyone thinks McQueen did, though Bud Ekins was the stuntster after Steve busted himself up and the producers wouldn't let him risk his life anymore. Even "The Wild One" had regular actors doing stuff on rigid-framed street bikes that make you think twice. A lot of the late '60's, early '70's "B" biker flicks had pretty good stunts, too. All these movies were made with few if any special effects. But the best un-effected biker movie of all times is (drumroll, please,) "On Any Sunday." Real racers on real motorcycles doing stuff we only dream of. OAS II is good too, a lot of good slow-mo's in both flicks showing you how REAL bikers do weird stuff. Pete the Cinematic Streak

Didn't see the movie yet, but does anyone remember the Speed Racer cartoon? The Mach 5 had special tires that could automatically change the tread for rough terrain. Just pretend that the motorcycle in MI 2 has this capability

It's also interesting to note that the tires on the Speed Triple and the other Triumph were stock street tires during the road scenes and knobbies during the dirt scenes. I knew the Triumphs were cool bikes, but I didn't know they had an automatic tire profile changer on the run. Dumb movie. Neat bikes.
