'klunk' on shift to first

I just bought a used '99 KLR650 and have only put 400 miles on it--it now has just over 1020 miles so is just out of break-in. I have owned several bikes but not recently and I'm not a bike mechanic. This one 'klunks' fairly loudly when stopped, going from neutral to first. The idle's set at about 1100 rpm. It reminds me of my old 1950 BMW R50/2 which didn't have any syncromesh--didn't hurt it but it really sounded bad. Is this noise normal for the KLR650, or am I chewing up gear teeth? PS: I'm in Annandale, Virginia, near Washington, DC, and am interested in meeting other dual-sport riders in the area. Phil

Don't sweat it. After break in it will go away, give it a few oil changes and it will go "snick" instead of "klunk". As far as the first shift of the day, some bright spark suggested engaging and releasing the clutch while the bike is in neutral and blipping (sp?) the throttle a couple of times to warm up the clutch plates for the first shift of the day. As I am a loyal part of the borg, I do whatever people on the list suggest and sometimes ( most of the time ) I am pleasantly surprised, ads I was with that great advice. I would guess the collective has a total of ~7500 years of motorcycling experience. Now I am off to put my tires on backwards. CA Stu <-- outa here tomorrow at 7 am to Moab via SLC and Pocatello.

Just the KLR and the toolikt, AFAIK, but things may be different in your part of the world.

Lowering links are not a factory item.

It depends on what was negotiated in the purchase. You tell us. Mister_T
