them things are only bungee nets that you can get at most any bike shop. they will stretch out fairly quickly but they're cheap. those bags were a stuff sack on one side and a compression sack on the other full of fairly lightweight stuff. the bungee nets hook into the expanded mesh behind the bags, and while they were very secure and stayed put down some rough roads and bumps that bottomed out the rear shock, i wouldn't trust them with anything heavier without a backup strap or bungees like the ones on the rack behind the seat. i'm probably gonna mold a set of panniers to fit my next rack setup, but after using this rig i don't really feel the need for them. everything held together for 1500 miles of interstate at 80+, one lane paved and unpaved roads, etc. the centerstand needs a little improvement to keep it from touching down, but everything else worked really well. i like dis machine.
>Thanks for the pics. I am interested to know what you are using for side bags
- those red net-looking thangs. i ain't ezactly no baby.......i swear i can carry more stuff on the klr than i can get on my st1100.
> My only concern is
overloading it with camping/rally gear, as I am already a big 55 yo guy and used to carrying all I want on my GS beemer. . later, jim james in sumpta(sumter), s.c............ p.s. on my last trip i discovered how to make a seriously good reading lamp--- you put a plain 'ol white styrofoam cup over the end of a c or d cell(the 5 d cell makes wonderful personal protection) maglite and it is like having a flourescent lamp in your tent to read by. quit laughing and try it. martha stewart and mcgyver, eat 'yo hearts out. a redneck remedial reader has solved the camplight dilemma.
