"Screamers". Has anyone actually used them against a bear? I don't live in an area that has bears (or at least that's the official word), but it's still an interesting idea.

Mine are East German military surplus paraflares. Poke around enough
surplus stores and you might still find a few. Havent tested any but I have
confidence in NVA equipment.

Smith&Wesson is the mfg. I have a set of them, they come in a nice rubber
container that holds the "pin gun" and about 6 flares. Each flare has its
own compartment and is completely enclosed. If anyone is willing to pay me
way to Moab I will bring it to show all (it was woth the try).
As for bears.....might be effective if you hit them in the face with it, or
might just piss them off.
FWIW a bear can run at 30mph for short distances, the fastest human on
record has run at 27mph. Hmmmmmm

True. But all you have to do is run faster than the guy next to you.

>Ah, well---- mine should have been sitting on the shelf from about the
same period but when I went to get it to change my rear tire I couldn't
find it. I'll have to check at the auto parts store to see if it is still
made. Some where on one of my shelves buried in all the other junk sits a
part of a gallon of Ruglide. Would have come in handy.

A final note on this subject: I found RuGlide for sale when I was at the
auto parts store picking up a new tailpipe to go along with my new muffler
which was supposed to fit the original tail pipe but didn't. Sigh! It was
priced at $12.50 a gallon at the local Napa store. When I got out of the
service, and before I went back to school, I worked in the auto section of
Wards working with tires mostly. Used an awful lot of RuGlide and it never
let me down. Good stuff made just specially for mounting tires.
