I have been through the lot. Lubes, chain wax, u name em. This is my third chain and I am sticking with WD40. About 6k so far and no wear and cleaner back wheel. Has anyone tried the Mobil-1 aerosol can spray-lubricant on their chain? I wonder if this is a suitable chain lube with longer lasting properties than WD-40 but won't gunk up as badly as other chain-specific lubes. Scott Blakney

I too go over-kill in the spares and tools department. I did get a flat once and was ill-prepare to fix it. Primarily because I relied on CO2 cartridges that vented everywhere but into the tire. CO2 is essentially a one shot deal. I have subsequently become a firm believer in elCheapo $15.00 compressor stripped of its plastic that connects to the battery - takes up about as much space as 3 CO2 cartridges. Thought about jumper cables for a long time but have never added them -- probably should consider it. I find tie-wraps and a selection of different sized hose clamps invaluable. Also JB Weld is easily worth its weight and space. I carry a set nylon web loops in case I need to tie down on a trailer or ferry. I once was towed and the operator was ill- prepared for motorcycles. Spare links and a chain breaker are peace of mind on long trips.
