I was trying to dump my '99 KLR for $3,000 after about four months because I realized it was too big and heavy for and old man to ride on rough, off-pavement roads. But, by the time my buyer decided to take it (about a month) I had changed my mind because I needed it for a ride and now it's 9 months old and I have ridden it about 8,000 miles, often on rough, off-pavement roads. At this rate I will probably be ready to give it away when it's a year old but it's no cherry anymore. I've abused it repeatedly on roads I know I shouldn't be on and I'm about to abuse it some more this weekend in Canyonlands. I'll be riding with my old motocross friends; the big decision is: will I need those damn stiff Alpinestars. I'm desperately looking for another dual sport motorcycle that handles as well as a KTM in the dirt and I will buy one just as soon as I find one that can do that and everything the KLR does. I'm not having any luck. Meanwhile, I'll just keep on abusing my KLR. I've talked my 640LC4 KTM riding friend into riding about 500 miles of pavement this weekend getting to and from trails (we leave the pavement near Hite) for the true dual sport experience. He even bought new tires for the occasion -- I don't know what; he couldn't get Gripsters that fit. My other friend for this trip, on a 600XT Yamaha, will ride anything anywhere so I'm sure he will do the 500 miles of pavement on serious knobbies. I hope they last. I'm packed. Tucked in a bottle of good French Pinot Noir and a long stem glass and I'm ready to camp at an un-named point overlooking the Needles area of Canyonlands. Retirement is good. Maybe my KLR will get a rest at Moab while I visit with list people I've never yet met. Too bad the legendary Knot won't be there. Verle Nelson Cedaredge, CO

yeah, the half life of that kind of line is about winding down for you Verle...after 150 of us try to keep up with you on the trails of Moab you won't be able to say it anymore without a loud and collective groan from the list....so enjoy it while you can. You have about two weeks to reflect on your life as Clark Kent.... Kurt
