[dsn_klr650] alternator/regulator upgrade info

Greetings Borg,
I bought a set. Of course I don't have any performance info for you (my
bike is STILL in pieces) but I'll tell you this.
When you are installing the stator DO NOT attack the screws with 8.5
Ft-lbs, as the manual recommends.
I stripped out two of the female holes last night. Can you say..... AW
SH*T, SCHMUCK, DARN, RATS and FOOEY!!
Got a Heli-coil kit today, have been too busy to go out and fix so
far. That cover is $125 from Yep you guessed it POINT CYCLE in Pitts,
PA. Give em a call and tell em Dash sent ya. Got the Heli-coil kit from
PepBoys for $30.
I was using a torque wrench, set at 4 # then 6# then 8.5# and went all the
way around for each of the three screws. It was actually an inch-lb wrench
so the appropriate conversions were used. When I got to 8.5# they just
kinda got loose again.
.
So anyway, I hope the Electex claims are correct. I'll be having the sun
mounted to my front fairing soon. I also converted all my blinkers to
running lights/blinkers for that "God I'm so cool" look.
Other things I encountered.... The new stator has the wires fed in the
opposite direction as the stocker, meaning that the bundle had to be bent
180 degrees to stay out of range of the magneto. The cover screws had two
conditions. Very tight thus easy to strip the heads or 2) when
re-installing them the cover threads began to yield easily, my first
indication that the stripping of the threads would be easy.
